2 Stern Warnings-ALLAH’s Threat to Polytheists & their Award

2 Stern Warnings-ALLAH’s Threat to Polytheists & their Award :-

Polytheism (Shirk) is considered one of the gravest sins in Islam, leading to severe consequences both in this life and the Hereafter. In Surah Al-Isra, Ayat 58-60, Allah issues a stern warning to the polytheists (Mushriqeen), reminding them of His power and the impending doom awaiting those who persist in associating partners with Him. At the same time, these verses also offer consolation to the righteous, reassuring them of Allah’s mercy and protection.

This blog post delves into these verses, exploring Allah’s warning to the wrongdoers and His promises of consolation to the believers. We will further examine relevant Qur’anic references and Hadith from the Qutub e Sitta to provide a comprehensive understanding of the divine message.

1.1 The Context of Surah Al-Isra

Surah Al-Isra, also known as Surah Bani Isra’il, is the 17th chapter of the Qur’an. It was revealed in Makkah during a period when the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was facing severe opposition from the Quraysh tribe and other polytheists. This Surah addresses several key issues, including the importance of monotheism, the consequences of disbelief, and the eventual triumph of truth.

  • Qur’anic Reference:
    • Surah Al-Isra, Ayat 58-60: “There is no city but that We will destroy it before the Day of Resurrection or punish it with a severe punishment. That has ever been in the Register inscribed. And nothing has prevented Us from sending signs except that the former peoples denied them. And We gave Thamud the she-camel as a visible sign, but they wronged her. And We send not the signs except as a warning. And [mention, O Muhammad], when We told you, ‘Indeed, your Lord has encompassed the people.’ And We did not make the sight which We showed you except as a trial for the people, as was the accursed tree [mentioned] in the Qur’an. And We threaten them, but it increases them not except in great transgression.”

These verses highlight the certainty of Allah’s punishment for those who persist in disbelief and polytheism. They also serve as a reminder that Allah’s signs are sent as warnings to guide people back to the right path.

1.2 The Consequence of Polytheism (Shirk) in Islam

Polytheism, or Shirk, is the act of associating partners with Allah in worship, and it is regarded as the greatest sin in Islam. The Qur’an repeatedly emphasizes that those who commit Shirk will face severe punishment unless they repent.

  • Qur’anic Reference:
    • Surah An-Nisa, Ayat 48: “Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin.”

This verse makes it clear that Shirk is an unforgivable sin if one dies without repenting, underscoring the seriousness of associating partners with Allah.

  • Hadith Reference:
    • Sahih Bukhari: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Whoever dies while still invoking anything other than Allah as a rival to Him will enter Hellfire.”
This Hadith further emphasizes the severe consequence of dying in a state of polytheism, where the punishment is eternal damnation.

1.3 The Destruction of Previous Nations as a Warning

Allah reminds the polytheists of the destruction of previous nations that persisted in their disbelief and rejected the signs sent to them. The story of the people of Thamud, who were destroyed after rejecting the she-camel as a sign from Allah, is a powerful example.

  • Qur’anic Reference:
    • Surah Al-A’raf, Ayat 73-78: “And to the Thamud [We sent] their brother Salih. He said, ‘O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. There has come to you clear evidence from your Lord. This is the she-camel of Allah [sent] to you as a sign. So leave her to eat within Allah’s land and do not touch her with harm, lest there seize you a painful punishment.’ But they hamstrung her, so he said, ‘Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days. That is a promise not to be denied.’ So when Our command came, We saved Salih and those who believed with him, by mercy from Us, and [We saved them] from the disgrace of that day. Indeed, it is your Lord who is the Powerful, the Exalted in Might. And the shriek seized those who had wronged, and they became within their homes [corpses] fallen prone.”

This passage serves as a stern reminder that Allah’s warnings are not to be taken lightly. The destruction of the people of Thamud is a historical lesson for all who reject the signs of Allah.

  • Hadith Reference:
    • Sahih Muslim: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “When Allah decrees a matter in the heavens, the angels beat their wings in submission to His decree, [with a sound] like the dragging of a chain on a rock. When the terror leaves their hearts, they say: ‘What has your Lord said?’ They say: ‘The truth. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.’ So those who are near [the Throne] hear it first, then those who are below them, until they hear it on the earth. And the jinn snatch it and try to cast it to their friends, but they are struck down by meteors.”
This Hadith underscores the power and authority of Allah, which extends beyond the earthly realm to the heavens, leaving no room for disbelief or rejection of His signs.

While the Qur’an issues stern warnings to the polytheists and wrongdoers, it also provides immense consolation to the righteous, promising them protection and guidance. The believers are assured that Allah is always with them, providing support and help in their trials.

  • Qur’anic Reference:
    • Surah Al-Anfal, Ayat 29: “O you who have believed, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty.”

This verse reassures the believers that their fear of Allah and adherence to His guidance will result in divine protection and forgiveness.

  • Hadith Reference:
    • Sahih Bukhari: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Whoever says ‘There is no deity except Allah alone with no partner, to Him belongs all sovereignty and praise and He is over all things Omnipotent,’ one hundred times will get the same reward as freeing ten slaves, a hundred good deeds will be written in his account, a hundred bad deeds will be wiped off, and it will be a shield for him from Satan on that day until evening. No one will do better than what he has done except someone who does more.”
This Hadith highlights the spiritual rewards and protection that come from sincerely acknowledging Allah’s Oneness, a fundamental tenet of the faith.

2.2 The Rewards of Patience and Perseverance

For the righteous, patience and perseverance in the face of trials are highly rewarded. The Qur’an and Hadith emphasize that the challenges faced by believers serve to purify them and elevate their status in the Hereafter.

  • Qur’anic Reference:
    • Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayat 155-157: “And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, who, when disaster strikes them, say, ‘Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.’ Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.”

This passage highlights the importance of patience during trials, promising divine blessings and mercy for those who remain steadfast.

  • Hadith Reference:
    • Sahih Muslim: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “The case of a believer is amazing. There is good for him in everything, and this applies only to a believer. This Hadith emphasizes the unique position of the believer, who finds good in all circumstances, whether in times of ease or difficulty.

2.3 The Promise of Paradise for the Righteous

The ultimate consolation for the righteous is the promise of eternal bliss in Paradise. The Qur’an vividly describes the rewards awaiting those who remain steadfast in their faith and actions.

  • Qur’anic Reference:
    • Surah Al-Kahf, Ayat 107-108: “Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds – they will have the Gardens of Paradise as a lodging, wherein they abide eternally. They will not desire from it any transfer.”

These verses assure the believers of an eternal reward in Paradise, where they will enjoy endless peace and fulfillment.

  • Hadith Reference:
    • Sahih Bukhari: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Allah will say to the people of Paradise, ‘O people of Paradise!’ They will say, ‘Labbaik, O our Lord, and Sa`daik!’ Allah will say, ‘Are you pleased?’ They will say, ‘Why should we not be pleased, O Lord? You have given us what You have not given to anyone else of Your creation.’ He will say, ‘Shall I give you something better than that?’ They will say, ‘O our Lord! What else could be better than this?’ He will say, ‘I will bestow My pleasure upon you so that I will never be angry with you after forever.'”
This Hadith illustrates the ultimate reward for the believers, which is the eternal pleasure of Allah, surpassing all other rewards.

3. The Role of Faith and Deeds in Attaining Allah’s Mercy :-

3.1 The Importance of Sincere Faith (Iman)

Faith (Iman) is the foundation of a believer’s relationship with Allah. The Qur’an and Hadith emphasize the importance of having sincere faith, which must be accompanied by righteous deeds.

  • Qur’anic Reference:
    • Surah Al-Asr, Ayat 1-3: “By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.”

These verses highlight the crucial connection between faith and righteous actions, indicating that both are necessary for success in this life and the Hereafter.

  • Hadith Reference:
    • Sahih Bukhari: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “None of you will have faith till he loves me more than his father, his children, and all mankind.”
This Hadith underscores the importance of sincere love for the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as an integral part of faith.

3.2 The Necessity of Righteous Deeds (A’mal Salih)

Righteous deeds are the practical manifestation of faith. The Qur’an repeatedly emphasizes that true believers are those who not only have faith but also engage in good deeds.

  • Qur’anic Reference:
    • Surah Al-Mulk, Ayat 2: “[He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed – and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving.”

This verse emphasizes that life is a test from Allah, designed to evaluate the quality of our deeds.

  • Hadith Reference:
    • Sahih Muslim: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Whoever relieves a believer’s distress of the distressful aspects of this world, Allah will rescue him from a difficulty of the difficulties of the Hereafter.”

4. Balancing Fear and Hope in the Worship of ALLAH :-

4.1 The Fear of Allah’s Punishment

Fear of Allah’s punishment is a necessary component of faith, as it keeps believers mindful of their actions and encourages them to avoid sin.

  • Qur’anic Reference:
    • Surah Al-Ma’arij, Ayat 26-27: “And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord. Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe.”

These verses highlight the importance of fearing Allah’s punishment, which serves as a deterrent against sin.

  • Hadith Reference:
    • Sahih Muslim: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “If the believer knew what is with Allah of punishment, none would hope for His Paradise, and if the disbeliever knew what is with Allah of mercy, none would despair of His Paradise.”
This Hadith emphasizes the balance between fear and hope in the believer’s relationship with Allah.

4.2 The Hope in Allah’s Mercy

While fear is necessary, hope in Allah’s mercy is equally important. It encourages believers to seek forgiveness and remain optimistic about Allah’s grace.

  • Qur’anic Reference:
    • Surah Az-Zumar, Ayat 53: “Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'”

This verse provides hope to all believers, reminding them that Allah’s mercy is vast and available to all who seek it sincerely.

  • Hadith Reference:
    • Sunan Ibn Majah: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Every son of Adam sins, and the best of those who sin are those who repent.”
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of repentance and the fact that everyone has the potential to return to Allah and be forgiven.

The Qur’anic verses from Surah Al-Isra, along with the supporting references from the Qur’an and Hadith, present a clear message: Allah’s warnings to the polytheists and wrongdoers are serious and should not be taken lightly. At the same time, these verses offer consolation to the righteous, reminding them of Allah’s mercy, protection, and the ultimate rewards that await them in the Hereafter.

For every believer, the lessons from these verses are a call to heed Allah’s warnings, avoid the path of polytheism, and strive for righteousness through sincere faith and good deeds. By balancing fear of Allah’s punishment with hope in His mercy, believers can navigate the trials of life and attain success in both this world and the next.
